MANITOWOC - The city of Manitowoc has reminded residents to use fertilizers and herbicides sparingly on and around their yards.

"Chemicals and weed killers are not needed for a healthy lawn, and they're one of the main reasons we have green algae in our lakes and streams," a press release released Wednesday by the city said.

According to the release, the city has recently received complaints of fertilizer on the sidewalk and in the street.

The release offered these tips:

  • Get a soil test so you know if your lawn needs more nutrients.
  • Use mulch to keep the lawn healthy.
  • If you do fertilize, do it in the fall and sweep up fertilizer that falls in the street and sidewalk.
  • When applying herbicides, follow the directions on the label.
  • Post a notice on your lawn after using herbicides so that others are aware and can avoid the area if needed
